Good Drivers Finish First
Virtue may be its own reward, but if you've been feeling like
nobody appreciates your goodness or at least your good driving, you're wrong. The Erie is
rewarding good drivers with rate reductions.
As part of the new Pioneer Experience Rating Credit (PERC)
program, The Erie will offer premium discounts to Policyholders with good claims records.
The program was introduced in Pennsylvania and Tennessee in January and in Maryland and
Indiana in March. If approved by state insurance departments, it will eventually be
available in all states where Erie does business. In the states where it has been
introduced, the discount will be applied on your 1999 renewal date! To qualify for the
PERC discount, Policyholders must meet the following criteria:
- They must have been continuously insured with The Erie for
three or more years.
- There must be no surchargeable accidents on the policy in that
period.
- The policy must have either no claims or only one not-at-fault
claim on which The Erie paid more than the PERC threshold for the past five years. The
PERC threshold varies by state.
"About 75% of our Policyholders will qualify for PERC
discounts in some states," said Sharon Cooper, personal insurance pricing supervisor
in The Erie's Actuarial Department. "The size of PERC discounts will vary from state
to state, and it will vary by Policyholder depending on the type of policy her or she has,
the number of years insured by The Erie and the number of claims."
The discount will be applied by policy, not by driver, so all
drivers on the policy must meet the eligibility requirements for the policy to receive a
discount.
The PERC program compliments other Erie programs designed to
reward good drivers, such as The Erie's very competitive "preferred rate." Our
"defensive drive plan" surcharges drivers who have accidents, which also enables
us to keep rates lower for drivers who remain accident free.
